New Delhi: India is sending 12 wrestlers (6 men and 6 women) in different weight categories for the upcoming Games. Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, and Indian Wrestling Federation (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed in an interview with TOI that all 12 will return home with medals.
Part…
What are your expectations from Indians Wrestling Casual on the upcoming Commonwealth Games?
Twelve wrestlers are going to the Games, and I think all 12 can bring home medals. The color of the medal will depend on their performance. A lot of factors come into play during big events; For example, we were expecting a medal from Vinesh (Phogat) during the Tokyo Olympics, then we were expecting a gold or a silver for Bajrang (Punia)… Circumstances are there, but if the wrestler going to Birmingham does his best. If they do, they are definitely going to win medals. Even our 6th or 6th number wrestlers – the pool we have – can get medals in the Commonwealth Games.
After the Tokyo Olympics, you had problems with organizations like Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) or JSW…
We had long talks with these organizations and now they are going to follow our rules. The federation does not want a single penny from them. But for any young wrestler he has to sponsor, performance should be the only criterion. One should not give money just by looking at the face, the performance should be checked. So now we have given them the list of best performers and they can support these wrestlers.
There were some problems with the players after the Olympics…
Those are things of the past. I can assure that our players are disciplined now. They function solely in accordance with the Union and Government of India. We have complete control over the game in India.

History of India in Commonwealth Games

Foreign coach or Indian coach – where is your inclination?
Foreign coaches have their own importance. Sushil (Kumar), Yogeshwar (Dutt)… Did they have a foreign coach or an Indian coach? Indian coaches have their own way of training. When we get world level champions in U-15, U-17 category, are they coached by foreign coaches? If our 15 year olds are beating Japanese girls, then who is coaching these Indian girls? If a foreign coach can teach you some nuances, that’s fine, but it’s totally wrong to bullshit our Indian coaches by saying they’re not good. I can say on record that if Deepak Punia had an Indian coach at the Olympics, we would have got a medal.
Have you set a backup generation for current Indian wrestlers?
We are now conducting Open National. Recently, in Chandigarh, we organized a junior level tournament. 159 wrestlers participated in 65 kg weight category, while 148 wrestlers participated in 61 kg category. Such tournaments used to end in one day, but have been extended to three days. 1700 wrestlers participated in one such nation. I am sure we will have 10-12 backups in each weight category, not three-four.
Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra are the centers of wrestling. Are you planning to take this game to other parts of the country?
There is something called genes. For example, we have so many runners, runners, athletes from the southern states. Similarly most wrestlers come from some states. That said, we are setting up an academy in Ayodhya and that academy will start very soon. In that academy, the children who are left behind… from the camps or Khelo India will be placed in the academy. That academy will have children from North India, Bengal, Bihar and other states. The Tata group has collaborated with us in setting up the Academy.
